Mark's Sleeve by SkullSugar

Yesterday, we enjoyed Maria's work by Fidel "SkullSugar" Quiñones at Lucky 13 Tattoo n Norwich, Great Britain. If you missed the post, revisit it here.

I only bring it up because, when I met Maria, she was accompanied by Mark, who had a full sleeve that was the handicraft of SkullSugar.

Check it out:

Of course you have the koi, swimming up the arm for good luck, with a phoenix on the opposite side of the forearm.

Mark noted that he works for the fire service, so the phoenix is a nod to that fiery vocation.

Mark also indicated that the green and yellow behind the carp is a subtle nod to the team colors of his favorite football club, Norwich City. "I would never put football emblems," he explained, "so I have a little bit of colour...that's the only personal bit to it."

As for the genesis of the sleeve, starting up top, Mark added, "It started off as a cover-up....I like Japanese work so I just let my artist just do his thing, really... he came up with the idea of a geisha..."

The colors of the work, speckled with the occasional cherry blossom, are really quite bright and vibrant. I don't generally like to photograph full sleeves, because it's hard to do them justice in two-dimensional venue, but I was impressed by this work enough to make an exception. I think we're able to see how nice this work is.
Thanks to Mark for sharing his tattoos with us here on Tattoosday!

The Tattooed Poets Project: Chandra E.A. Dickson

Our next tattooed poet is Chandra E.A. Dickson who sent us this photo:

Here's the piece in a little more detail:

Chandra tells us:
"This tattoo was given as a gift to me for completing my MFA at Wichita State University by my dear friend Ryan Drake. He tattoos at Freaks on Noland in Kansas City. He can also be followed on instagram under the user name draketattoo. Ryan and I went to college together, and I owe many of his paintings. This tattoo is his 35th tattoo. He has done 100s now.
The poem [below] is from my chapbook, A Short History of Our Love. There are many references to birds in my work, which is why I decided on a sparrow as both an image for my work but also for my tattoo because of the old saying "God never forgets a fallen sparrow" and at times we all feel that we have falling in some way or another."
For Jimmy

You called Thursday—8am—4 your time—to have phone sex, but I already had on pants and hadn’t heard from you in weeks. Your voice sounded as if you had been drinking for days. When I asked if you were ok, you said there had been no luck finding a bear to make friends with, a woman to keep my side of the bed warm, or a job on a fishing boat. The glacier’s peak calls you to ascend. Cracking ice in the middle of the night, the sound so harsh, not at all like wind against wheat, kept you awake. I tried to tell you about the thousands of sparrows that flew north over the church steeple, how empty I’ve felt since you left.

~ ~ ~

Chandra E.A. Dickson received her MFA from Wichita State University and currently teaches at a small community college in the middle of the Plains. Her first chapbook, A Short History of Our Love"(Finishing Line Press), won the Kansas New Voices award in 2013. Her work has appeared in various online and print journals. She is currently working on her second chapbook, learning how to cook, and taking too many pictures of her children and pets.

Thanks to Chandra for sharing her tattoo and poem with us here on the Tattooed Poets Project!

Tattoosday Walks Into a Bar: Flowers in Phoenix

On a recent trip to Southern California, my connecting flight in Arizona had mechanical difficulties and I got bumped to another plane, two hours later.

As luck would have it, there is a fabulous bar in the Phoenix Sky Harbor airport – Four Peaks Brewing Company

So while I whiled away my time, chatting with the bartender and other patrons, I caught up on email, gobbled up some delicious quesadillas and enjoyed Four Peaks’ Oatmeal Stout and their ¡Odelay!
The Stout was cold, dark and delicious, and the Odelay was one of the best beers I’ve had. It had the full body of a dark beer, with the delicious chocolaty taste, punctuated with a kick of spiciness. I knew it was what I’d be ordering when I stopped back on my return.

I also chatted with one of the servers, named Katie, who was kind enough to share this floral half-sleeve:

The arrangement includes orchids, lilies, cherry blossoms and daisies. “I love orchids and lilies,” she told me, adding “I have a fresh orchid in my apartment at all times.”

When I spotted the text on her inner arm, she allowed me take a photo of that, as well:

It reads “We accept the love we think we deserve,” which is a quote from  Stephen Chbosky's The Perks of Being a Wallflower one of Katie’s favorite books.

She credited her work to Miguel at Body Canvas Tattoo in Phoenix.

I enjoyed my brief respite at Four Peaks and looked forward to stopping back in on my way back to New York. Alas, my return brought me in at the height of the lunch hour. The place was mobbed and I only had a brief layover.

Thanks to Katie and the staff at Four Peaks Brewing Company! Katie, for sharing her awesome tattoos, and Four Peaks, for making a delay in my travels significantly more delicious!

Shayna's Docs, Inspired by Japanese Tattoo Design

We've all seen tattoo-themed clothing, led by the societal onslaught of the "Ed Hardy" clothing line, which was hijacked by fashion designers and turned the brand into a stereotypical joke.

But there's a right way to appropriate the design aesthetic and make it stylish and hip. Check out this new pair of Doc Martens my 16-year old just got for her birthday:

Take a closer look:

The Doc Martens website says about these boots:
"Our 1460 8-Eye boot has been a counter-culture classic since it first came out in 1960. Inspired by the iconology and styling of US Hardcore bands and their fans, we've wrapped this iconic style in Japanese-influenced tattoo art-- including koi fish, cherry blossoms, peacocks and clouds (plus a red 1460 hidden away in the pattern). The intricate design is printed in muted tones on tan full grain leather, set off by a strong-and-simple black welt and grooved sole."
You can order them online here.

I'd get a pair for myself, but my teenager would kill me.

A Light for the New Year

It has been a quiet fall, but we're gearing things up in the new year by sharing leftover work spotted in 2015.

First up is this piece I spotted on 4th Avenue in Brooklyn:

This tattoo is on the right thigh of Danielle, who I met back in August in Bay Ridge.

This is a traditional- style piece with a nautical theme. The lighthouse is actually a candle, with a storm approaching - dark clouds and lightning approach. The piece is bordered in rope with a cherry blossom at the bottom. A paper boat floats on the blue sea.

In Danielle's words:
"Basically, it's the light that never goes out. You got the rain, the candle and the candle's still going pretty strong - that's guiding the paper boat."
Danielle credited Matt Huff at Brooklyn Ink with this work. Most of her tattoos were done by Matt and the other artists at Brooklyn Ink.

Matt had a piece featured over the summer, here, an awesome George Carlin tattoo.

Click through the tag for Brooklyn Ink below to see all the work we've featured previously on the site.

Thanks to Danielle for sharing this cool tattoo with us here on Tattoosday.

Happy New Year to all!

Heather and Her Stunning Tiger Tattoo

Down where I work during the week, you tend to see a lot of professional dog-walkers during the day. Last month, I spotted a woman, wearing a shirt that read "KEEP CALM AND CARRY TREATS." She wasn't the first person spotted wearing that shirt, as it is often worn by people working for Paws on Pine.

Anyway, I noticed that she had a pretty cool half-sleeve and, although I didn't interview her then, I figured I would get another opportunity soon.

I spotted the woman again last week, walking a pooch up on Wall Street. I introduced myself.

Heather, it turns out, is the owner of Paws on Pine, and this is the tattoo that caught my eye originally:

This stunning tattoo was done by Kristi Walls, who is currently "resident guest artist" at Sacred Tattoo, but has also worked at Bang Bang Tattoo and East Side Ink.

The details, shading and line work in this piece are stunning - just take a closer look:

Heather explained to me that she was laid off three years ago from a corporate job and "got this to symbolize resilience and strength, because I ended up taking a year off and then I started my own dog-walking business."

Thanks to Heather for sharing her work with us here on Tattoosday and, if you're ever in need of professional dog-walkers in lower Manhattan, be sure to check out Paws on Pine.

Kay Shares an Amazing Back Piece (at the NYC Urban Tattoo Convention)

Last weekend at the NYC Urban Tattoo Convention, I met Kay Reynolds, a model who shared this phenomenal back piece by David Sena:

The crow, skulls and cherry blossoms in this back piece are exceptional.

Kay explained that this massive tattoo is a cover-up in progress. Here's what it looked like before Sena began his work and, in the early stages:

Courtesy of @KayPossible on Instagram
Even incomplete, you can tell how amazing this work is.

Thanks to Kay for sharing her back piece with us here on Tattoosday!

Start Your Three-Day Weekend with These Three Amazing Tattoos from Hannah

I recently spotted Hannah outside of the West 4th Street subway station and the cherry blossom tattoo on her upper right arm seemed like a perfect way to celebrate spring:

That photo alone made me happy, but Hannah generously offered to also share her favorite tattoo, pulling down her shirt slightly to reveal this cool heart on her chest:

And then, for good measure, she showed me her third tattoo, this stunning watercolor dragonfly on her hip:

What a lucky inkblogger I was to find such amazing work on such a generous contributor!

Hannah credits all of her tattoos to Zera Anderson from Brite Idea Tattoo in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

Regarding the tree on her arm, she explained, "I told [Zera] I wanted cherry blossoms and that I really like watercolor-type designs and so she basically just freehand, just did it." She added, "the same with all of them, actually."

Thanks to Hannah for sharing her wonderful tattoos with us here on Tattoosday!

The Tattooed Poets Project: Teresa Mei Chuc's Cross-Cultural Ink

Our next tattooed poet is Teresa Mei Chuc, who has had all of her tattoos done at Shogun Tattoo in Pasadena, California by Andrew Moore.

Teresa tells us:

"My first tattoo, in Tibetan script, is my dharma name, Rinchen Khandro, which means 'precious dakini or sky dancer' in Tibetan. The name was given to me by Wangchen Rinpoche of the Maha Vajra Center in Los Angeles during my Buddhist refuge ceremony. The name means a lot to me because it embodies my spirit and purpose in life...dancing in the sky has a deep metaphorical meaning to me. The sky also represents sunyata. I wanted it tattooed because I wanted to always remember it among all my other names (Vietnamese - Tue, Cantonese - Mei Wai, American - Teresa).
The other tattoo on my back is cherry blossoms. I found out recently through a mitochondrial DNA test that I was part Japanese and the cherry blossoms represent that part of myself. I had known that I was part Vietnamese and part Chinese; my Japanese lineage came as a surprise and I wanted to embrace that part of me and the history that is interwoven with it."
"The tattoo on my wrist is the word 'sunyata' in Sanskrit. Sunyata means emptiness, nothingness, openness. It is an important concept to me and a very important concept in Buddhism."

"The tattoo on my upper arm is a Vegvisir, a Norse protection symbol. It is a Runic compass and a symbol from the 17th century Icelandic grimoire called Galdrabok ('magic book'). I tend to get lost, so I hope this built-in compass will keep me from getting lost."

"On my leg is an endless or eternal knot, an important Buddhist symbol representing the interweaving of the spiritual path, the flowing of time and movement within that which is eternal.
I find these days, it is easier and easier to forget the important things and my tattoos help me to remember."
Teresa also sent along her poem "Pencil," which was previously published in the anthology Mo (Silkworms Ink, 2011) and in The Good Men Project:

Pencil

"In spite of everything I shall rise again:
I will take up my pencil, which I have
forsaken in my great discouragement,
and I will go on with my drawing."

- Vincent Van Gogh

A missile is shaped like a pencil -
its long, slender body and pointed
end creates history.

A girl walking down the street
a few steps ahead of her sister and friend,
two medics who were trying to help
injured people, the parked ambulance -
all were annihilated by the same weapon.

Above, drones - silent, unmanned planes.
A metal, predatory bird that shoots a missile
with precision, identifying the colors of a shirt,
the features on a face - the shape of a nose,
the color and length of a mustache.

In a room far away, in another country, a man
sits at a desk and looks at a screen; he strokes
his thick, dark mustache as he carefully
contemplates, then pushes a button.

There is a charred hole in the ground
where the girl once stood.

There are pencils that write and erase,
write and erase, so that there is nothing
to be read on the page. The page blank
as the desert sky, blank as the smooth shell of a drone.

There is a family drinking mint tea
in a living room.
The man holds a cup to his lips,
the glass touches his mustache.
A silent bird hovers above.
In a split second, everyone is dead,
the house is in rubbles - arms, legs,
splattered organs among broken concrete.

Soon, there will be no trace.

~ ~ ~

Teresa Mei Chuc was born in Saigon, Vietnam and immigrated to the U.S. under political asylum with her mother and brother shortly after the Vietnam War. Her poetry appears in journals such as EarthSpeak Magazine, Hypothetical Review, Hawai’i Pacific Review, Kyoto Journal, The Prose-Poem Project, The National Poetry Review, Rattle, Verse Daily and in anthologies such as New Poets of the American West (Many Voices Press, 2010), With Our Eyes Open: Poems of the New American Century (West End Press, 2014), and Mo’ Joe (Beatlick Press, 2014). Red Thread is her first full-length collection of poetry. Her second collection of poetry was just accepted for publication by FootHills Publishing and is forthcoming in 2014! Kimberly's Flowering Sugar Skull

It may be 9 degrees today in New York, but I'm thinking about last July, when I was basking in the warmth of the New York City Poetry Festival on Governor's Island.

And inkspotting, of course!

I met a woman named Kimberly, who shared this sugar skull:

Kimberly got this about six years ago at Addiction Ink in the East Village.

There's a lot of symbolism in this piece, and Kimberly elaborated for me:
"The flowers in the eye are for my grandmother, and then every flower around the edge is a favorite flower of a female member of my family. Left eye is a rose, right eye is a mum, pink one is prairie rose, gerber daisy , cherry blossom, daisy, and then roses [at the bottom]."
"What's the significance of the gold tooth?" I asked.

Kimberly laughed, "I really liked it - if I really want to mess with somebody, I say it's how many men I've killed!"

This is one of four tattoos that she has.

Thanks to Kimberly for sharing this great tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Carlos Shares a Buddha Tattoo (NYC Tattoo Convention)

I met Carlos at the New York City Tattoo Convention earlier this month, and he shared this great tattoo:

Carlos told me that this tattoo was inspired by his appreciation of the Buddhist way of thinking.

It's a great black and gray piece, with that extra pop from the color from the cherry blossoms.

He credited Needles at East Side Ink in New York City. Needles' work has previously appeared on Tattoosday here and here.

Thanks to Carlos for sharing his tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Chris and His Koi (at the NYC Tattoo Convention)

I'll be honest, koi tattoos are pretty popular, so I don't often post photos of them. But, every once in a while, I see an exceptional one, and feel compelled to share it here.

The photo above is of a stunning koi tattoo, courtesy of a guy named Chris, who I met last week at the NYC Tattoo Convention.

It's an exceptionally well-done piece, with the traditional Japanese carp, or koi, swimming upstream, along with a lotus flower at the bottom and cherry blossoms at the top. Note also the way water and movement is skillfully represented.

Chris credited Jeremy Miller from Screamin' Ink Tattoo in Fair Lawn, New Jersey. Note: this is a different Jeremy Miller than the one who competed on the first season of Ink Master.

I usually see something spectacular from the talented crew at Screamin' Ink every year at the convention, all of which can be seen in previous posts with their shop tagged here.

Thanks to Chris for sharing this great sleeve with us here on Tattoosday!

Tattoosday Goes to L.A. - Max's First Tattoo for Mom

On my way back to the airport last week, my father and I had lunch at La Sirena Grill in El Segundo.

The meal was delicious, and I'll certainly be raving about their spicy BBQ duck tamale for quite some time.

As an added bonus, our waiter, Max, had plenty of visible tattoos and, even better, he shared one with me to post here on Tattoosday:

Max explained that this was his first tattoo and he went big in honor of his mother, who is a cancer survivor. BCB in the banner are her initials, and the word "Láidir" is Gaelic for "strong".

This tattoo was done by Baby Ray at Bob & Charlie Roberts' Spotlight Tattoo on Melrose in Los Angeles.

Thanks to Max for sharing his tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Yuiko's Cherry Blossoms Ring in a New Year

As an old year ends, and a new year begins, let's celebrate with this photo of Yuiko's cherry blossoms:

I met Yuiko at the Brooklyn Lyceum over the summer.

She was sitting a couple rows ahead of me during a performance of Piper Theater's Fiddler on the Roof.

After the show, we chatted about her work and she later e-mailed me more information about the work, also sending me a clearer, "fresher" photo:

Yuiko credited this work to Kohei Toyama, an L.A.-based artist she met at the NYC Tattoo Convention a few years back.

I also snapped this shot of the lotus tattoo on the back of her neck:

As we move from one year to the next, let's pause and remember to cherish every moment, because life's beauty, like the cherry blossom, is fleeting.

Thanks to Yuiko for sharing her beautiful tattoos with us here on Tattoosday, and a happy new year to all of our contributors and readers!
