Meghan's Tribute to Bosco

One of my favorite tattoos spotted at the NYC Tattoo Convention back in June was this abstract piece on the arm of Meghan:

This tattoo was done by the renowned artist Yann Black from Your Meat is Mine in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Meghan explained it is a tribute to her dog Bosco, who passed away in Mexico City. The Day of the Dead design on the canine face is a nod to the Mexican culture.

Now that Meghan's dog is tattooed symbolically on her, Bosco can accompany her when she journeys to the next life.

If you want to see more of the amazing abstract work from Yann Black, visit his website here or check out a gallery over at Inked here.

Thanks to Meghan for sharing this awesome tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Dale's Legs (at the NYC Tattoo Convention)

Last month at the NYC Tattoo Convention, I met Dale, whose colorful calves jumped out across the room:

That Day of the Dead sugar skull is pretty darn spectacular. And the Day of the Dead art on the back of the left calf is equally awesome:

Dale said she loves olorful work and just happened to be in the company of her daughter, Mandy Fabrizi, the artist "who did most of [the work]." Mandy works out of Clockwork Tattoo in Lyndhurst, New Jersey.

Thanks to Dale for sharing her cool tattoos with us here on Tattoosday!

Ella's Ink Represents Life and Death

Earlier this month, I met Ella Caution at the NYC Tattoo Convention. She shared this tattoo from her arm:

This Day of the Dead-inspired design was tattooed by Josh Damaso from NYC Kulture on St. Mark's Place in Manhattan.

Ella gave me a brief explanation of the symbolism in the tattoo, saying it has representations of time, life, and death. Past and present are inherent in the piece, and the tentacles in the crown are symbolic of evolution.

Ella is a designer and model. Check out her Etsy site here.

Thanks to Ella for sharing her tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Melissa Shares a Kiss That Transcends Life

At the Fifth Avenue Festival in Bay Ridge a couple Sundays ago, I met a couple, Matt and Melissa, who are significantly tattooed.

We'll see Matt's tattoos tomorrow, but today we are checking out this cool tattoo on the back of Melissa's right calf:

These are two Day of the Dead skulls, with roses, caught in an embrace.

The work is by Jessica Lockard from Third Dimension Tattoo Studio in Marshalls Creek, Pennsylvania.

Come back tomorrow to see work by Brian Murphy from Third Dimension on Matt.

In the mean time, thanks to Melissa for sharing this cool tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Kelsy: The Flesh is Weak, But The Soul is Willing

Last month I met Kelsy at The Lock Yard, one of my favorite places for craft beer and artisanal hot sausages. It's also becoming one pf my favorite places for inkspotting.

Kelsy was showing a lot of ink and offered up her chest piece for inclusion on Tattoosday:

Kelsy explained this lovely work:
"I got the tattoo for my grandmother that passed away when I was seventeen. She was basically a mom to me. She always was so nurturing and close to me. So I got the flesh is weak but the soul is willing because I feel that all of the things and all the pain that you go through is only going to shape your soul, what goes on in your soul is willing to persevere through everything  ... I got roses because she grew roses and I'm not Hispanic, but I got a Day of the Dead skull, Dia de Los Muertos, because it's a celebration of death, not the loss ... but the celebration of what they gain and what I gain from always being with me ... even  though i'm 3000 miles away from my family, I feel like they're always with me..."
She said the piece was created by "a mix of a couple people," most notably Eli Falconette at Blacklist Tattoo in Portland, Oregon. Eli was responsible for the roses.

Thanks to Kelsy for sharing this beautiful tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Lauren Shares Two Tattoos with a Literary Feel

I met Lauren at the NYC Poetry Festival last July on Governor's Island and she shared two tattoos.

First up is this appropriately literary piece:

Lauren explains:
"Kill Your Darlings is a [William] Faulkner quote … it’s his advice on writing ... when you are creating a piece of literature, you’re favorite lines are always the first to go. So I took it to mean that I tend to sacrifice the favorite parts of myself for the greater good of my creation."
Lauren also shared this interesting piece:

Lauren elaborated on this piece that was tattooed by Bart Bingham at NY Adorned:

"This is actually based on an artist named Brandon Maldonado - he does a lot of this Day of the Dead style and I showed it to Bart and he was actually able to take it and make it his own and kind of put his own spin ... I discussed the elements I really wanted to keep and the elements that he could play with and he was able to turn it into something really special and unique. My favorite part is, if you’ll notice in the brain, it’s a love story ...
... So you see these people and they’re together and it’s new and then they have a falling out and he’s in the rain and then they’re kind of older and they reconcile and are together again, riding a tandem bicycle together and then I really just like the colors of it. Immortality I thought was really interesting – if you want to really affect your writing, using writing as a way to become immortal and leave your mark on the world, regardless of what you physically leave it."

Amy Honors Her Grandmother with a Brandon Maldonado Design (via Zac Brown)

Last month, Tattoosday reader Amy was the lucky winner in our Brooklyn Tattoo t-shirt giveaway.

We struck up a transcontinental conversation, and she offered to share some of her work with us, in what we  call a little "tattoorism."

Let's take a look:

She credited the work to Tony Carey at Hold Fast Tattoo in Prescott, Arizona.

Amy explained, "it's based on the original artwork of Brandon Maldonado's "Our Lady of Merciful Fate" which was featured on the Zac Brown Band's album Uncaged."

via brandonmaldonado.com
She added, "I was looking for something to honor my grandmother and I had been wanting a day of the dead tattoo ... when I saw this album cover I fell in love with Brandon's art."

Thanks to Amy for being a top-notch Tattoosday reader and generously sharing her ink with us here on the site!
