Nick's Brooklyn Back at the Fifth Avenue Festival

Last week at the Fifth Avenue Festival in Bay Ridge, there was a lot of ink on display for all to see. One of the most impressive things I saw was this back piece on a guy named Nick:

I didn't get all the details on this, but the top of the tattoo reads "King's County Brooklyn" and the bottom reads "Rapid Life." The Brooklyn Bridge spans the center of the back with the Manhattan skyline in the background.

Nick credited the artist Yosh from The Ink Gallery in Staten Island with this amazing back piece. You can see work from Yosh, including this tattoo, in various stages, on his instagram @theinkgallery_tattoo

Thanks to Nick for sharing this great back piece with us here on Tattoosday!

Danny's Bridge Tattoo Celebrates Brooklyn

Earlier this year, I snapped this photo of a new tattoo on my friend Danny's back:

Danny explained:
"I was born in Brooklyn, but raised in Queens. I married a Bensonhurst girl, and we moved to Bay Ridge after being hitched for about twenty minutes.
I quickly fell in love with the neighborhood and the whole borough. Just love the history and the new improvements that are all over. Brooklyn has the urban feel of Manhattan with the small community of Queens.
The Brooklyn Bridge is an icon of both the whole city and recognizable anywhere."
This was tattooed by Bella at Brooklyn Made Tattoo here in Bay Ridge.

Thanks to Danny for sharing his cool tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Coney Island, USA (Thanks to Tommy)

Occasionally, friends text me photos of tattooed people. This is one of the benefits of celebrating people's body art.

This came to me, courtesy of my friend Tommy, who snapped this photo of an anonymous guy's Brooklyn pride:

The gentleman did not want to credit his independent artist, but was willing to share.

Thanks to Tommy for thinking of me and sharing this Brooklyn ink with us here on Tattoosday!

New York City in Black and Gray

Last Friday I was coming up out of the subway, only to discover the skies had opened up, and a fierce thunderstorm was dumping water in buckets in Bay Ridge. A handful of people stood one level down at 95th Street, waiting for the torrents to subside. I struck up a conversation with one guy (whose name now escapes me...Johnny? I can't be certain) who had this fantastic tattoo running the length of his arm:

The distinctive twin towers of the World Trade Center rise majestically on his arm, as the Brooklyn Bridge comes toward the viewer and a Coney Island-bound F train curves out of the tunnel, following the contours of this gentleman's arm.

Here's a closer shot of the NYC skyline:

Some nice touches on this piece are the subway car of the F train, which is based on a 1930's version of the subway and the graffiti over the tunnel which reads "Vive Tus SueƱos," or "Live Your Dreams."

This work is credited to Eric Rignall from Ink Stop Tattoo NYC.

Thanks to my fellow commuter who shared this awesome tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Johnny Shares His Angels and Demons

I met Johnny on the Coney Island boardwalk, and he allowed me to take a photo of his back to share with Tattoosday readers:

The top of the back reads "Brooklyn" and the bottom sums it up: Angels & Demons.

Johnny explained:
"It's just the passions of my life. I went through turmoil and came out of it. So, basically, I'm wearing on my skin, my griefs, my sins and my dislikes."
He couldn't be specific about who did what, but he said that the majority of the work was done by Coney Island Vinny and Michael Angelo, two staples of old-school Brooklyn tattooing.

Thanks to Johnny for sharing his back tattoos with us here on Tattoosday!
